GDC Client Eligibility

Go Divorce Clinic (GDC) is designed exclusively for cooperating couples who are self-represented and who wish to complete a standard California uncontested divorce with agreement.

Before registering for the GDC Portal services, please review the eligibility requirements below carefully.

This service is not appropriate for

The GDC Portal is not designed to be used for:

  • Legal separations
  • Summary dissolutions
  • Annulments
  • Contested divorces
  • Cases where only one spouse is participating
  • Cases with formal attorney representation (consultation is acceptable; representation is not)
  • Couples that have registered cases with the California Department of Child Support Services or active Court established domestic violence protection/restraining orders
  • True Default cases where one spouse is not participating

GDC serves couples only. Both spouses must register and work through the process together.

Who this service is for

You may use the GDC Portal if all of the following are true:

  • Both spouses agree to divorce and are cooperating
  • Both spouses are communicating respectfully and responsively
  • Both spouses are self-represented (no attorneys appearing in the case)
  • Both spouses are of sound mind and legal capacity
  • Both spouses have access to a computer or internet and email
  • Both spouses have access to a printer
  • Both spouses agree to make all decisions jointly
  • Both spouses agree to complete the process within the GDC required time frame

Core Participation Commitments

By registering, couples agree to the following:

Cooperation
We will work together, start to finish, through the GDC self-managed process.

Honesty
We will be truthful with one another, and all information submitted will be accurate to the best of our knowledge.

Timeliness
We agree to complete the GDC portal process within the allotted access period. Portal access ends after the stated term.

Joint decision-making
All decisions regarding property, debts, support, and parenting issues will be made jointly by the spouses/parents. GDC does not make decisions for you.

No refunds
We understand that there are no refunds if we fail to complete the process for any reason, or do not follow GDC Portal instructions, or if we reconcile our marriage during the GDC Portal process.

Safety and appropriateness

Do not use this service if any of the following apply. If so, we strongly recommend consulting a family law attorney.

  • There are current or past instances of domestic violence, restraining orders, or intimidation
  • There are existing divorce, legal separation, or family court cases
  • There are existing child custody or support orders
  • The California Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) is involved
  • Someone other than the parents has custody or guardianship of the children
  • One spouse is incarcerated
  • The children lack medical coverage
  • The parties are not married or are registered domestic partners
  • The divorce is based on anything other than irreconcilable differences
  • A prenuptial or postnuptial agreement exists and you do not intend to conform to it
  • You want a court-imposed support order without mutual agreement

What GDC provides — and what it doesn’t

Go Divorce Clinic provides:

  • A guided, portal-based uncontested divorce process
  • All required California divorce documents, fully prepared
  • Step-by-step written instructions
  • In-house video guidance to assist with filing and completion

GDC does not:

  • Provide legal advice
  • Make decisions for you
  • File paperwork on your behalf
  • Serve documents for you

Couples using the GDC Portal DIY process agree to handle:

  • Filing documents with the court
  • Serving required paperwork
  • Making copies and providing envelopes with required postage
  • Completing required court submissions

Why This Matters

Over decades of practice, we’ve seen too many couples become stuck, delayed, or rejected by the court after using services that were not appropriate for their situation.

This eligibility check exists to protect you — your time, your money, and your outcome.

If you and your spouse meet the criteria above and are ready to work together, GDC provides a clear, proven path to completing your divorce.
